FREE THE PIKE!

Sponsored by Citizens Against Tolls

    1. Removes all tolls on the Mass Pike from I-95/128 westward, and merges the Pike with the Massachusetts Highway Department.
    2. Removes the tolls on the Tobin Bridge.
    3. Reforms the Turnpike Authority to make it more accountable to the voters of the state. The current 5-member board will be replaced with a 3-member board consisting of the state Treasurer, the Secretary of Finance and the Secretary of Transportation.
    4. Prohibits any future tolls from being erected on any highways in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
    5. Changes the way toll violation fines are assessed and appealed. Currently, anyone who does not pay a toll by going through the Fast Lane without a transponder has a picture taken of their license plate. The first violation results in a warning being mailed to the violator; the second violation results in an automatic $50 fine. The fine can only be appealed to the Turnpike Authority. To appeal the fine in a court of law, one must file a civil action, which costs money and is time-consuming. The new law, as proposed in this ballot initiative, will lower the fine to the price of the toll plus $5.00. Appeals will no longer be made to the Turnpike Authority, but will instead by treated like any other violation, which can be appealed in a court of law.
